Browser Game of the Week: Tower of Heaven

Did you like LIMBO? How about Super Meat Boy? Then odds are you will probably like Tower of Heaven. By Askiisoft, with great music by flashygoodness, Tower of Heaven is a platforming game reminiscent of others that have come out this year, but has its own unique take. Oh, and did I mention it originally came out about two years ago?

Without trying to spoil too much, the goal of Tower of Heaven is to get to the top of the tower. “Sounds easy!” you say, well it’s not the hardest game out there but it’s definitely not easy as you, dear reader, so eloquently put it. What makes the game get more difficult as you progress is that the ruler of this tower can set rules upon you. For instance, there may be a level where you cannot touch certain colored blocks, which is frustrating at first but gets easier in time. The other rules that are set upon you are quite interesting and make the game challenging, fun, and reasonably difficult in addition to buzz-saws, jumps and dangerous butterflies, you’ll encounter throughout the levels. You’ll never get the feeling of “this is impossible, I hate this…” and turn it off and never come back to it… as I may or may not have done with games in my past. Also, the game (even though it’s a browser game) saves your progress. So if you do have one of those moments or can’t complete it in one sitting, don’t fret.

A really neat addition is that there is a level editor/creator and a ‘Speed Run’ mode. Speed Run is essentially a ‘time trial mode’ but the level editor is easy to use and incorporates all the features that you encounter throughout the normal single player game. Also, the rule of the editor is that you must be able to beat it yourself before being able to share it. So, yes, I made a level and you’re more than welcome to try it out by going to the TGH forums, where I’ve posted a ‘how to’ on how to get it going OR… click HERE for the direct link.

What makes Tower of Heaven so great that is it is a man’s quest to get to the top of this tower, yes… but if you want to look deeper into it, the game has a hidden little message. What that message is, is probably up to the player, but it will most definitely, even if only for a second, make you ponder and/or REALLY try to help this little guy who’s constantly being told “turn back”, “you’re going to fail” and so forth.
