Notable Releases: Q3 2011

Author’s note: All release dates listed are for North America. In the future this article may expand to Europe, Australia, and maybe Japan.

Summer is here. The sun is shining, school is out, everyone’s hitting up the beach, and the video game industry takes a “3 month hibernation.” This is the time of year commonly referred to by the gaming community as the “summer drought” and this year makes no difference. Where the second quarter saw the launch of the Nintendo 3DS, the return of GLaDOS, and hell freezing over in the form of Duke Nukem Forever‘s release, there isn’t much to follow it up in the next three months. That is, unless you’re into cheating wall-climbers or shoving a lancer through locusts.

As for puzzle games with a twist, we have Catherine, (360, PS3) a game that I can only describe as interesting. Initially thought to be not coming out in this part of the world until Atlus sprung the news shortly after denying its localization, you play as unfaithful programmer Vincent as he tries to right his love life and climb towers made of blocks in his nightmares, struggling to survive.  The game can be classified as exotic at best but seems good based on the footage. Don’t expect it to be a simple game, though, because even the Japanese are complaining about how hard this game is. (Fortunately there is a super easy mode that was added post-release to the Japanese version.)  Catherine arrives July 26th.

In the past, the Starfox series has obtained meme status on the Internet. That being said, 3DS owners will be able to “Do a barrel roll!” once again when Starfox 64 3D (3DS) flies into stores on September 11th. Much like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D before it, Starfox 64 3D stays true to the original with an upgrade, and introduces some camera support in multiplayer. However, the big question people are going to ask about this game is “Why isn’t the multiplayer online?”

On the tail end of the Summer Drought is a game that will lead the way into the holiday season. Epic Games’  anticipated Gears of War 3 (360) arrives on September 20th. We know the multiplayer will be a big hit, but will the new colorful environments and four player co-op make it even better? What will become of Clayton Carmine? We’re bound to find out in only a couple of months.

Again for this month, the Nintendo DS has nothing notable over the next while, note that we might see a free version of The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords on DSiWare near the end of the quarter though this is unlikely. Even still, the DS isn’t dead with announcements of three games: Kirby Mass Attack, Professor Layton and the Last Scepter, and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 all coming to the DS in the next year. The PSP, on the heels of E3 and Sony’s Vita announcement, still has some games coming out, most notably the port of the PlayStation’s Persona 2.

Here’s what to expect over the next three months. Again, this is the North American release schedule. I will try to include Europe’s schedule next time around when it’s time to look into the fourth quarter.
